Holy Trinity church.
Squire Cabell passed away on 5 July 1677 and from this point on the hauntings began. It was said that grotesque black hellhounds with demon red eyes were seen stalking in a menacing fashion around the squireâs tomb. Villagers purported to have witnessed a whole array of dark, hideous, inhuman creatures that appeared to pay homage to the wicked squire.
Local legend has it that if you pass around the squireâs tomb seven times and then place your hand through the gap between the wrought-iron bars, Squire Cabell or the Devil himself will appear and snatch your hand. Beware.
In the nineteenth century the church itself was known to be the haunt of bodysnatchers looking for a freshly buried corpse. Early in the same century it was struck by lightning and then on 8 May 1849 it was attacked by arsonists, later being repaired in 1884. The precious stained-glass windows were shattered by bomb blasts during the Second World War. Finally, on 21 July 1997, at around midnight, a fire was started under the churchâs altar; unfortunately the fire was so intense that the church could not be saved. Many locals believed the fire was started by Satanists, as the area was known to be a hotspot for devil worshippers.
I have spent some time at Holy Trinity church and can say that once it becomes dark the whole area takes on a different vibe. You do have the feeling you are not alone and being watched by unseen forces.
On one occasion, I and three other people spent around 6 hours at the site trying to capture evidence of paranormal activity. Although I never came face to face with large black monstrous dogs, whilst standing by Squire Cabellâs tomb I did feel pure dread and wanted to leave the area â could this have been auto-suggestion?
We decided to spend time in one area that was sheltered from the elements and we called out to encourage any active spirits to give us a sign of their presence. On two occasions a trigger object that was placed on a nearby windowsill flew off with force and landed on the ground. This was witnessed by all four of us. We repeated the process around half an hour later, once again asked for a sign, and once again the trigger object flew to the ground.
Further activity was witnessed by the group, with two of the team seeing the dark silhouette of a figure in one of the church doorways. The team immediately checked the area with high-powered torches but with no evidence of anyone or anything being in the close vicinity.
